The UV and visible spectra of chlorine peroxide : constraining the atmospheric photolysis rate

چکیده
The photolysis of chlorine peroxide (ClOOCl) is a key chemical step in the depletion of polar stratospheric ozone. As such, precise measurements of the absorption cross sections for ClOOCl are required. In this paper we provide two critical pieces of laboratory data with which to constrain the rate of ozone depletion. First, we provide an optically pure ClOOCl spectrum in the photolytically important UV wavelength region (200–350 nm). Second, we provide the first ever measurement of the ClOOCl spectrum in the visible region (509–536 nm) conclusively demonstrating the photolysis of ClOOCl to be negligible in this spectral region. The visible measurement is important because it can be used to anchor other previously recorded UV spectra and hence reduce the uncertainty in the ClOOCl photolysis rate. The calculated photolysis rate from this study indicates that the current models of stratospheric ozone depletion are correct.

Atmospheric Chemistry of Cyclohexanone: UV Spectrum and Kinetics of Reaction with Chlorine Atoms
Absolute and relative rate techniques were used to study the reactivity of Cl atoms with cyclohexanone in 6 Torr of argon or 800–950 Torr of N2 at 295 ± 2 K. The absolute rate experiments gave k(Cl + cyclohexanone) = (1.88 ± 0.38) × 10−10, whereas the relative rate experiments gave k(Cl + cyclohexanone) = (1.66 ± 0.26) × 10−10 cm3 molecule−1 s−1. Cyclohexanone has a broad UV absorption band wit...

The atmospheric lifetimes of the halogenated anaesthetics halothane, enflurane, isoflurane, desflurane and sevoflurane with respect to reaction with the hydroxyl radical (OH.) and UV photolysis have been determined from observations of OH. reaction kinetics and UV absorption spectra. Rate coefficients for the reaction with OH radicals for all halogenated anaesthetics investigated ranged from 0....
متن کاملUltraviolet absorption spectrum of chlorine peroxide, ClOOCl.
The photolysis of chlorine peroxide (ClOOCl) is understood to be a key step in the destruction of polar stratospheric ozone. This study generated and purified ClOOCl in a novel fashion, which resulted in spectra with low impurity levels and high peak absorbances. The ClOOCl was generated by laser photolysis of Cl2 in the presence of ozone, or by photolysis of ozone in the presence of CF2Cl2. Th...
متن کاملThe UV-visible absorption cross-sections of IONO2
The UV-visible absorption spectrum of gaseous IONO2 has been measured over the wavelength range 245– 415 nm using the technique of laser photolysis with timeresolved UV-visible absorption spectroscopy. IONO2 was produced in situ in the gas phase by laser flash photolysis of NO2/CF3I/N2 mixtures. Post flash spectra were deconvolved to remove contributions to the observed absorption from other re...

Laboratory-made snow doped with either hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) or formaldehyde (HCHO) was exposed to radiation in the UV and visible range resulting in a decomposition of both compounds. These experiments demonstrate that besides the photolysis of nitrate further photochemical reactions of atmospheric relevant compounds can take place in snow. Under similar conditions the decomposition of H2O2...
